“It will take a year or more to determine what needs to be done to improve the building, and Matthews said he is working with local architects to get ideas. He envisions maintaining retail space on the first-floor with improved, brighter storefronts and restoring the basement, where a speakeasy once was housed….

The four-story hotel opened in 1916 at a cost of $150,000. The building, which had 72 rooms with rates as low as $2.50 a night, a ballroom, a banquet hall and a private dining room, represented “the final word known to modern hotel building and equipping,” the Ames Evening Times reported at the time.”
